Orkney is an archipelago of seventy islands just ten miles off the Scottish coast.
The largest island is called Mainland and as we arrived in Kirkwall, it’s largest town, the sun was shining and the wind had dropped.
We were lucky – it is so windy on Orkney that trees do not grow!
Its been in the news this week that a British woman was shot in her car after accidentally entering a favela . We always walk around on our own in any city that we visit but we did feel the need to be more cautious in Rio than many other places. We deliberately steered clear of any areas we thought looked a bit seedy especially at night.
But there is an essential sight to see in Rio despite it being in a tough area – a favela.
You are supposed to visit Giverny in the spring- the wisteria and waterlilies are at their best then. But given the chance to visit in July I jumped at it.
Claude Monet settled there in 1883 with his wife and eight children and lived there until his death in 1926.
